I moved to manufacturing overseas- for a very specific reason.
The answer is simple, and I want to offer the short version up front:
Manufacturing in Asia is allowing us to invest in our local mountains.
How did I come to this conclusion? Read on!
When I started this business several years ago, I was determined to have an ecologically-sound, low carbon impact consumer goods product. This meant, at first, that manufacturing in Canada would definitely be the way to go. After all, who doesn't like the "Made In Canada" branding?
Zooming out a little bit, I came to a realization that I also think that protecting our forests, protecting our mental health, and riding bikes is important, too. And I thought to myself: If I spent that margin I allocate towards making a product in Canada, took that money and applied it to something else that is extremely close to my heart, could I have a potentially higher impact within my community?
I've been introduced to an ethical overseas manufacturer in who produces high quality vehicle seat covers among other textiles. I've decided to bring them on to the Mudbutts team. My commitment is simple: with every purchase, I'm able to commit margin I otherwise would allocate to the "Made In Canada" label, and I'm putting it towards initiatives that resonate even closer to my community.
This opens up the doors for us to commit to donate portions of our profits to help save our dear old growth forests, trail advocacy & maintenance, and spur on mental health & outdoor advocacy.
It wasn't an easy decision, but I believe it is the right one, for now, for this next chapter. I'm so excited for our road ahead, and I'm overjoyed that you are here to share in this journey.
Here's to the trees and water that keep us happy and feed our soul.
